“My father did an excellent job and we’re here to continue it”
When ÓpticaPro was first published in January 2005, Adão Ferreira de Pinho made our first cover. He was a highly respected optician in the industry and owner of Adão Oculista. His daughter, Paula Pinho, told us about him and his desire of seeing the new generation of opticians in Porto on the cover of our magazine.
We are here to honour ÓpticaPro 1. And, consequently, your father, our first cover’s interviewee. We start by asking: who was he?
Paulo Pinho: He was a visionary with an eye for business. He opened Adão Oculista 57 years ago and he turned it into a pretty reputable firm while he was alive. He did a fantastic job and we are here to continue it.
What were the main values conveyed by Mr. Adão?
PP: The value he always defended was good customer service. That’s our mission, that’s why we exist. Nowadays, everybody writes the mission and puts it on the website. Our values have been framed on a wall since 1968 – curiously the year I was born – in a place where all employees can see them, whenever they arrive and whenever they leave the store.
15 years from now, can you imagine the new generation of Adão Oculista on the cover of ÓpticaPro?
PP: (laughs) I very much hope so! It would be a fantastic situation, which I would really like to experience. For those who founded the Adão Oculista it would give them great pride … but God holds the future. Let’s hope that we can pass the experience on to this new generation, just as it was passed on to us by my father.
